Taking Measurement for Participants of a Research Project

In the Hexoskin Shirt, cardiac and respiratory sensors are embedded at the chest and belly button level. These sensors need to be close to the body to measure and collect good data quality. It is thus important to take the measurements at those specific locations in order to assign your research participant the proper Shirt size.

Steps to take the participant’s measurements:

  1. Use a standard tailor’s tape to perform the measurement in inches.
  2. Take all measurements as close to the body as possible by applying the measuring tape against the body or tight-fitting clothes (i.e. ask the participant to take off any thick shirt)
  3. Ask the participant to maintain a usual standing posture, with arms along the body
  4. Ask the participant to lift up their arms, pass the tailor’s tape around their chest
  5. Ask the participant to lower their arms and place them along their body
  6. While being measured, ask the participant to breathe normally
  7. Take the circumference measurements from the participant’s side to ensure keeping the tailor’s tape parallel to the floor
  8. Place the tailor’s tape underneath their breasts or pectoral muscles
  9. Write down chest measurement
  10. Ask the participant where his/her belly button is located
  11. Place the tailor’s tape at the belly button level
  12. While being measured, ask the participant to breathe normally
  13. Take the circumference measurements from the participant’s side to ensure keeping the tailor’s tape parallel to the floor.
  14. Write down the abdominal measurement
  15. Optional: for female participants, it is recommended to take an additional measurement at the fullest part of the breast to better assign a Shirt size.
  16. Refer to the appropriate sizing guide to assign a Shirt size.
