We list and explain how sleep is monitored with Hexoskin and the sleep metrics monitored with Hexoskin
The Hexoskin smart clothing sensory modalities are specifically designed to monitor cardiac, respiratory, and activity health. Furthermore, Hexoskin has innovatively supplementary metrics that leverage our multimodal smart garments. These metrics integrate cardiac, respiratory, and activity data to enhance monitoring of sleep.
Hexoskin Sleep Metrics
Total sleep time (TST)
The time spent in sleep stages during the recorded time. According to the American Sleep Society, the mean TST is about 8 hours for an individual but may vary from 6 to 10 hours according to genetics. Hexoskin determines TST based on your cardiac and movement activity.
Sleep Efficiency (%)
Sleep efficiency, in percent, expresses sleep quality. It’s the proportion of good sleep experienced while laying in bed. A value of 85% or higher means a good night’s sleep. The sleep efficiency metric respects the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) definition, which represents the proportion of time asleep over the time in bed.
Sleep Percent (%)
This metric represents the proportion of time asleep over the sleep period (defined as the time elapsed between falling asleep and waking up).
Heart Rate, Breathing Rate, and Minute Ventilation
During sleep, your heart rate, breathing rate, and minute ventilation should be the same or a little bit lower than during daytime at rest. You can compare your sleep values to the values obtained during the 5min Rest Test using the Hexoskin app.
Sleep Position Changes
The number of times an individual changes position during a night. There is no normal range for that value. By comparing a night to previous nights, we can evaluate if the patient is more or less agitated. Through observation and time, it is possible to create a normal range with regular Hexoskin use.
Automatic Sleep Detection
Hexoskin Server Processing automatically takes the device’s position into account when calculating the metrics. When a patient is standing, the Hexoskin device instantly recognizes that the patient is awake, preparing to go to sleep, or getting out of bed during the night. The time in bed is automatically calculated and the time to fall asleep is more accurately estimated based on the device’s position.
Awakening
Wake time after sleep onset (See AASM standards).
Heart Rate Variability - HRV Norm HF (your personal %)
Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is the variation of heart rate (HR) over time. HR varies from beat to beat depending on external or internal stimuli such as emotions, heat, respiration, sleep and physical exertion.
